"Now, if Marvel really wanted to show the reader what was going on in this long-winded, exposition-heavy issue, they should have just typed up a bunch of rambling words, stuck them on the cover and had the X-Men snoring away in the background from sheer boredom."
-Brian Andersen on Astonishing X-Men #35

FBOTU’s Weekly Comics Load: Kiss Him, Conner!

image

Clicky-click!

Some good stuff in this week’s Load! From the political to the profane (admittedly, not that far of a leap), this week’s titles have it all. So, what are you reading this week? Be sure to let us know here in the comments or over in the Comics Forum. Also, if your favorite title hasn’t been showing up in the Load, be sure to let me know and I’ll add it. Just be ready to answer all my stupid questions as I catch up. On with the Load!

imageThe Boys #39
Mon Petit Hughie! Don’t you know that until you find out how freaky your new trick is, you can’t say stupid things like, “Three-ways are disgusting.” And especially not when said trick is already way out of your league. Stupid, stupid boy.

imageBuffy the Vampire Slayer #32
The comics metahumor is cranked up to 11 in this issue, which begins the final arc of the Twilight story. Buffy’s new powers make her faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but the fun and games and inside jokes come to an end when she discovers the source of those cool new tricks. Brad Meltzer’s script here really shines, reminding me of the good old Buffy days or yore and proving that the key to comedy really is...

imageRed Robin #9
I have a bad feeling about this. As much as it’s fun to see Tim kick Ra’s ass, the consequences are going to be a bitch. It makes me wonder what Bruce would have done in the same situation? Would he have crippled the League of Assassins, or would he have saved the girl and left well enough alone? With so many loved ones at stake, Tim’s going to have to work around the clock to protect everyone. Meanwhile, all our Conner/Tim prayers have been answered, thanks to this long-awaited embrace. But, Conner, did you have to be an ass about it? Couldn’t you have just hugged him back? Now, we just need to squeeze Dick in there somewhere.

imageSiege #2
Some conspiracy theorists suggest 9-11 was an inside job, or that the US government (or its representatives) were at least aware of the impending attacks. I bring this up, because Siege is essentially a reimagining of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US and this country’s subsequent actions and reactions. In Siege, however, there’s no doubt, and the reader knows exactly who is behind the attack that prompts Norman Osborn’s media- and public-friendly retaliatory invasion of Asgard. Everyone plays his assigned part in the drama; those who question Osborn are arrested; patriotism is defined as blind obedience, whatever the cost. It’s a difficult read, surprisingly haunting and powerful. It’s not without its soaring moments, though. Pick up a copy and check out the last panels of the issue. I dare you not to cheer.

imageSuperman: World of New Krypton #39
I was a little surprised when I saw the words “Final Issue” printed on the cover. I’m rather glad, though, since World of New Krypton has been a confusing, meandering mess. In any mystery where the villain is finally unmasked, you don’t want your audience saying, “Wait. Who’s that again?” Superman is now seemingly free to go back to Earth and put Mon-El out of his misery. And the door has been opened for the possibility of a Kal/Zod bromance, so it’s not all bad. Just mostly bad.

imageThe Torch #5
Speaking of bromances, the Torch and Toro invite the Human Torch (aka Johnny Storm) to flame on with them for a while. Or as the Thing says, “We kinda had a shortage of people who could catch fire. Now I think we’re all good.” I’m beginning to feel sorry for Tom, though. He keeps throwing himself at Jim, but since Jim is dead inside and no longer capable of human emotion, he keeps shooting him down. Give it up, Tom. Go for Johnny. Sure, he’ll dump you or cheat on you, but at least it’ll be fun while it lasts.

imageWonder Woman: Blackest Night #3
Okay, Mera and Wonder Woman fans. You’re going to have to fill me in on this one. I’m lost. If you haven’t read this issue yet and you don’t want to be spoiled, just skip past this entry. Okay, Wonder Woman and Mera do some kind of Vulcan/Amazonian mind meld, and in a big two-page spread, we see the important events of each of their lives. After the meld, they are both shocked at each other’s secrets and big revelations. I get Diana’s. That was kind of foreshadowed in a previous Blackest Night title. Is there more to it? And what the hell is Mera’s big shocking secret? Does it have something to do with the baby in the bubble? Or her standing over Aquaman with her trident. Seriously, fill me in. I will check on Wikipedia, but I like it better when you guys tell me stories about queens and knights in spandex armor.

That’s all the Load that’s fit to print this week. Be sure to let us know what’s rocking your comics world lately. Oh, and one more thing:

...timing.

Happy reading!
