My current obsession is the series of Sassy Gay Friend videos on YouTube. They are produced by The Second City Network, and I can’t get enough of them. Basically, this clever series places Hollywood’s “sassy gay best friend” stereotype in the middle of various Shakespearean tragedies to dispense advice and save the lives of doomed female characters like Ophelia and Desdemona. The concept works so well, because it not only manages to skewer the misogynist norms of Shakespeare’s plays, but also the flamboyant gay minstrels Hollywood sticks in romantic comedies and on TV to dispense valuable advice to lovelorn straight women.
Just take a look at this exchange between Sassy Gay Friend and Juliet, from Romeo & Juliet:
Juliet: I’m a grown woman. Sassy Gay Friend: I think you’re 14, and you’re an idiot! You took a roofie from a priest! Look at your life. Look at your choices. Have you even slept with this guy? Juliet: I did. Sassy Gay Friend: You big slut! Good for you!

I never liked Romeo & Juliet much. It’s my least favorite Shakespeare that’s not a history. This pretty much perfectly sums up why I find the main characters so frustrating.
