Quote of the Week: Shake Them Haters Off

By Chance

June 27, 2010 at 12:58AM EDT

When I can bring myself to watch or read the news, I find it very frustrating that the media will give a voice to just about any anti-gay wacko who has something cruel to say, but won’t follow it up with any sort of positive message from anyone else. I mean, have they determined that the formula to sell their advertisers’ products is to put as much sensationalized anti-gay rhetoric they can out in the universe? Does that really sell soap and used cars?

I was feeling particularly hopeless recently, when I happened to hear part of this song on OutQ on Sirius XM. It’s by Kelly Rowland (formerly of Destiny’s Child), and she shared the track exclusively with OutQ. (Yay for Kelly!) Since then, it’s been leaked all over the interwebs, and I’ve adopted it as my new anthem. I’m not perfect, but I try to be a good person. Try to be honest and compassionate. Try to help more than I harm. Try to love and be loved. Then, the next day, I try to do better. So, sometimes it just baffles me that there are so many people out there who don’t know me, but hate me and my friends and loved ones and go to bed proud that they’ve spread just a little more hate in the world. Bizarre.

Kelly sums up some of my feelings very nicely in “Shake Them Haters Off,” which is an admittedly silly name for an upbeat song about living your life in the face of adversity. Here’s a line:

“It’s like a job that I never get a break from,
Because haters never take a vacation.
Really, I don’t even mind if they’re hatin’ all the time,
Guess I’m doin’ something right.”
“Shake Them Haters Off” by Kelly Rowland

And here’s the song. Can’t wait for Kelly’s new album and a video of this.
