Quote of the Week: Ooo…a Sparkly!

By Chance

There are actually a few lines I quote from the animated masterpiece The Secret of NIMH with some regularity. For instance, when my moral lapses or seemingly wicked actions are questioned by kind-hearted buffoons, I always say, “I’ve learned this much: take what you can, when you can!” Or when I see an elderly person struggling with a set of keys, I inform her, “You can unlock any door, if you only have the key.” I was chatting with a friend of mine last night about all things NIMH, and placed all the blame for my ability to recite the whole film squarely on HBO in the 80s, which showed the movie every day for the entire decade. My favorite quote, though, is one of those magical movie incantations that promises great rewards to the brave and true. In case you didn’t spend your childhood memorizing the movie, Mrs. Brisby goes to Nicodemus, the leader of the rats, for help in moving her house and family to safety. Nicodemus presents her with a glowing red amulet, a gift from her late husband, and in that awesome Derek Jacobi voice, tells her:

“Courage of the heart is very rare. The stone has a power when it’s there.”
-Nicodemus, The Secret of NIMH

Having never been brave nor true, I can only imagine how awesome it would be to hold such power and smite your enemies with it. Seriously, Mrs. Brisby should have exterminated all the rats, then set fire to the farmhouse. We should do a NIMH retrospective soon, and look into the possibility that, despite multiple viewings, I may have missed the moral of the story somewhere along the way.

I was addicted to HBO in the 80’s! This movie used to and still does scare me, it was creepy.

I saw it a million times in my youth too.
Not because of HBO, didn’t even know what that was.
NIMH was one of my mothers top favourite films, and the video tape would be played pretty much every week.

I actually don’t think I’ve seen it again since she died, but I do have a copy kicking around somewhere on DVD.

“If there was a cat out there, I’d be sneezing my brains out. See I’m allergic to ca… Allergic to *Aaaaachoo!*”

Warning though, if you havent seen the sequel, don’t bother!
