Quote of the Week: No Zombies Over Capuccino

I had coffee today with the head of our local zombie society and organizer of the annual zombie walk. Really. And since we were talking about zombies, the subject of last week’s episode of Supernatural came up. As a zombie scholar, my new friend praised the show and checked off the various zombie movie tropes they managed to include in their tale. I explained that while that was all well and good, my favorite part was the opening exchange between Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Digger, a witness and probable town drunk.

Dean: You gave yourself your own nickname? You can’t do that.
Digger: Who died and made you queen?
-Supernatural, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”

Zombies and angels and demon-hunting aside, one of the things I love about this show is its sense of humor. As the show’s curmudgeon or “straight man,” Dean is often confronted with human idiosyncrasies that he finds infinitely more befuddling than the supernatural mysteries he faces. It’s great character stuff for Dean and helps inject a little levity in the heavy proceedings.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 9/8c in the US on the CW. You can watch the full episode for free on the CW website.

I loved the Prophet episodes where they discussed the homo-incestuous slash fiction.
    ‘They know we’re brothers, right?’
It wouldn’t matter if you really were, Jensen.
