Quote of the Week: Meow!

When Batman Returns first came out, I saw it with a handsome, but odd fellow who was fairly obsessed with Catwoman. Not long after, he invited me over to see his newest toy: an 8-foot bullwhip. I heard the cracking from a block away. We saw the movie together several times, and I couldn’t help falling for both Michelle’s portrayal of Selina Kyle and for my bullwhip-cracking friend. The walls of his bedroom disappeared under images of Michelle in latex, and I even presented him with the action figure from the movie, which to me is practically on the same level as an engagement ring. We talked about duality and our dark sides long into the night and fell asleep under the watchful eyes of his many posters of Ms. Pfeiffer. Our summer of Catwoman came to an end before I could get him into any latex or leather, but I’ll always remember his single-minded devotion to the movie and the character. My other friends rolled their eyes and warned me that this guy just wasn’t normal. I would find myself defending him in the words of Ms. Kyle herself: “It’s the so-called normal guys who always let you down. Sickos never scare me. Least they’re committed.”

What?!  A Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman figure exists?  How the hell did I miss that?  I’m scouring e-Bay as I type this…  I was quite obsessed with Ms. Kyle also.  I remember I had about five too many “Batman Returns” t-shirts in my wardrobe that I would obsessively wear to work.  For many years, My sibs and I would quote the movie.  “Life’s a bitch, now so am I!”

She’s the best Catwoman I’ve ever seen, second only perhaps to Eartha Kitt because really, how do you compete with that?  But Pfeiffer’s Catwoman is certainly the darkest, most complex version of the character we’ve seen in the adaptations.  Pretty much the only way I could get truly excited about another Batman film is if Christopher Nolan put Catwoman in the next entry.
