Quote of the Week: “Is This the End of Zombie Shakespeare?”

Can you believe “Treehouse of Horror XX” just aired last week? Crazy. When I was three and watching “Treehouse of Horror I,” it never occurred to me that 20 years later, The Simpsons Halloween episodes would be a much beloved annual tradition in my life. My favorite part of the week leading up to Halloween is that all the “Treehouse” installments air in syndication. I just caught “Treehouse III,” which might possibly be my favorite. There are so many classic lines in that episode, including some really great riffs, like Homer‘s conversation with the shopkeeper in “Clown Without Pity,” Smithers’ suspicious dismissal of women in “King Homer” and the appropriately Shakespearean tragedy of Zombie Shakespeare.
The quote I’ve chosen is a similar riff, featuring Homer at his best. This was back when Homer was still somewhat intelligent and was portrayed as a father who tried and failed to do the right thing, but at least tried.
Lisa: Dad, we did something very bad! Homer: Did you wreck the car? Bart: No. Homer: Did you raise the dead? Lisa: Yes. Homer: But the car’s okay? Lisa, Bart: Uh-huh. Homer: All right then.
-“Treehouse of Horror III,” The Simpsons
I’m planning a “Treehouse of Horror” marathon this week and will attempt to cram 20 years of goofy, ghoulish gags into every minute before Halloween comes and goes for another year. But if The Simpsons have taught us anything, it’s that we should try to keep a little Halloween in our hearts throughout the year. Or maybe that was A Christmas Carol. God bless us, everyone!
