While my beloved Roger Ebert and I may not agree on every film, there’s no denying he is a brilliant writer. Thankfully, that also makes him infinitely quotable. While other critics (myself included) tackled the emotional content of Toy Story 3, Roger wrote a fairly breezy, almost dismissive review of the film. Then, in the midst of it all, he drops this zinger:
“If you ask me, Barbie is anorexic, and Ken is gay, but nobody in the movie knows this, so I’m just sayin’.”
-Roger Ebert on Toy Story 3
Well, of course, that’s what we were all thinking. And I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the filmmakers were thinking, too. The only people still holding onto Ken’s heterosexuality work at Mattel. Still, for two plastic icons, Barbie and Ken showed a remarkable amount of depth in the film. Barbie got to be the hero for once, and Ken got to be the bad boy. It would have been nice if Ken had ended up with Woody, though. I’m just sayin’.
