Quote of the Week: At Least I Left Some Stories They Can Tell
By Chance

Long, long before every goth and emo kid in town was sporting a Jack Skellington t-shirt, I was fairly obsessed with The Nightmare Before Christmas. I felt strangely drawn to its subversive celebration of the dark and the weird. In addition to annual viewings at Halloween and Christmas, I found comfort in TNBC when I was still testing the waters of my gayness…gaiety…gayosity. So, after every disastrous break-up or burning bridge, the one song that comforted me the most was “Poor Jack.” “Why does nothing ever turn out like it should?” became my refrain. But more than mix tape material for youthful melodrama, The Nightmare Before Christmas serves as a masterpiece of counter-culture sensibility and a beacon for all those souls who look at a Christmas tree and can’t help imagining it bursting into flames. The quote that best represents that for me is from “What’s This?” when Jack first discovers Christmastown and proclaims:
“There’s children throwing snowballs, instead of throwing heads,
They’re busy building toys, and absolutely no one’s dead!”
And here’s Fall Out Boy‘s version of “What’s This” synced to the scene from the movie:

That covers a bit too ‘McFly’ for my tastes. Much prefer the origional.
What’s this? In here. They’ve got a little tree, how queer!
NBX has always been a Halloween tradition at my house. It’ll be on in the background when I have the kids over to make their Jack O Lanterns.
