There’s a reason I usually only write about movies. Reviewing a TV series is grueling, but here I am reviewing Season 9 of Smallville, now available on DVD and Blu-ray. This show can really take you on a roller coaster ride emotionally. One moment you’re ooing and ahhing at Lois and Clark’s relationship, the next moment—BOOM—you’re launched into the future and main characters die, or main characters wanna die or someone might die.
Season 9 deals primarily with Zod (Callum Blue) leading the Kandorians in an attack against Earth. These people are the same Kryptonian race as Clark “Kal-El” Kent (Tom Welling). Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) is also around throughout the season, looking sexy and shirtless most of the time. (A habit I’ve now picked up, much to the joy of my partner Mark. 
) The relationship between Clark and Lois (Erica Durance) begins to blossom in the romance department, and Clark’s struggle to “out” himself to Lois comes off as very realistic and honest. Erica’s portrayal of Lois has got to be my favorite portrayal of this character. I really can’t believe that she was added later into the series run. This girl is no helpless damsel.
One of the best episodes of this season would have to be the epic two-parter featuring the appearance of the Justice Society, as well as Pam Grier as Amanda Waller. Other DC characters make appearances throughout, like Speedy and the Wonder Twins, but this epic episode is a must-see for DC fans. Those Wonder Twins were hot, too, and I know about hot twins.
Sometimes the acting can get hammy, and the stylized sets look like they were re-used from Birds of Prey, but the season as a whole definitely had one good thing going for it: there’s always a sense of fun and unpredictability. True, some episodes were off the wall with their A stories (one involved Zatanna and an enchanted comic book), but even obvious “filler” episodes revealed little bits and pieces of the main storyline and kept the characters engaged.
The DVD special features include commentary for the episodes “Kandor” and “Idol.” Erica Durance and Callum Blue easily dominate these commentaries. Erica really knows her stuff and reveals a lot about what goes into Lois’s thought process. Callum Blue reveals that Zod uses his sexuality to get his way with both women AND men. A featurette about Zod is also included, featuring interviews with the cast, crew and even Terrence Stamp, the original Zod from Superman II. A featurette about the making of the epic “Justice Society” episode is also included, as well as some deleted scenes from various episodes.
With kick-ass female characters, beefy, shirtless men, nice homages to Superman iconography, various cameos from DC characters and a strong lead villain, this season really comes together, and the awesome season finale leaves you wanting more.
The tenth and final season of Smallville is currently airing Fridays at 8/7c on the CW.
