Sunday, July 25: The Gay Stuff

The Sunday schedule is here! Is it a bad sign that I’m already exhausted, and that’s just from reading the schedules?! Sunday is traditionally “Kids’ Day,” so you might be tempted to pack up your cape and tights and head home. But there’s still lots to do and see! Plus, if for some unfathomable reason, you haven’t stopped by to say hi to me at the Prism Comics booth, Sunday is your last chance (har har). Seriously, I want to meet you! (And don’t tell anyone, but the truth is you’re my favorite.)

Blatant pandering aside, if you’re still around on Sunday, here are some highlights from the schedule (or shhhhedule for our UK fans) to keep you busy! You can see the full schedule here.

Sunday, July 25: The Gay Stuff

10:00-11:00 Smallville Screening and Q&A— Comic-Con favorite Smallville returns for its last visit to Comic-Con in advance of the show’s 10th and final season, as showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson join star/executive producer Tom Welling and series stars Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman, and Justin Hartley to talk about the year ahead, answer fan questions, and give an exclusive sneak peek at clips from the final season.

10:00-11:00 BOOM Kids! Muppets Spotlight— Mark Waid moderates as Eisner Award-nominated cartoonist Roger Langridge gives up all the secrets behind creating the critically acclaimed fan-favorite The Muppet Show Comic Book. A must-attend spotlight for all Muppets fans!

10:30-11:30 ABC’s Castle: Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic— Up close and personal with actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, creator Andrew Marlowe and executive producers Rob Bowman and Laurie Zaks. Be sure to be on hand for the Q&A session, filled with exclusive videos and fun surprises.

10:30-12:00 Comics Arts Conference Session #13: Queer Comics— Lien Fan Shen (University of Utah), the artist of I Will Be Your Paradise traces the production process of her manga, reveals the author’s struggles with the publisher, and examines the negotiations of her “queer” identity and Taiwanese identity since publication. Ben Bolling (UNC-Chapel Hill) looks at how the “truth” about Marvel’s Northstar—who he is, whom he loves, whether he lives or dies—is not simply written by creators and handed down unilaterally to fans, but instead operates in an ongoing and often heated negotiation between creators and Northstar’s gay fans. Harry Thomas (UNC-Chapel Hill) argues that rise of the Midnighter to “iconic, breakaway star” status in the Wildstorm universe has been accomplished by the subtle but consistent feminization of his partner Apollo, curtailing the radical potential of a queer couple by coding them as a traditional male-female relationship. Mark Miner (Poet-at-Large) draws on the Greek tradition of underage partners and rhetorical competitions exemplified by Plato’s Phaedros to understand Yun Kouga’s manga Loveless, which features a similar same-sex, under-age partner relationship

11:00-12:00 Marvel: The Women of Marvel— One of the most talked-about panels from last year is back! Forget Storm and She-Hulk; meet the real Ms. Marvels of the comic world! Join women from every discipline in the creative process at Marvel to hear what it’s like working as a woman in comics today and how you can join them. Say goodbye to the so-called “Boy’s Club”—these ladies are busting down the four-color ceiling! Panelists include Marjorie Liu (Black Widow), Kathryn Immonen (Heralds), Christina Strain (Shadowland) and more!

11:15-12:15 Supernatural Screening and Q&A— Cast members, executive producers Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund, and creator/executive producer Eric Kripke present an exclusive sneak peek at footage from the highly anticipated sixth season of Supernatural, which moves to a new day, Fridays at 9pm ET/PT on The CW this fall.

11:45-12:45 Comic-Con Debut: International Hit Merlin— There will be magic and adventure aplenty as the global sensation Merlin (airing on the BBC and in 170 countries, including Syfy in the U.S.) makes its Comic-Con International debut. Series stars Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Merlin himself, Colin Morgan, join co-creators and executive producers Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy to guide fans through a mystical behind-the-scenes tour of the popular series, providing an exclusive sneak peek at scenes from the upcoming third season and taking an insightful and often humorous glance back at the series’ first two seasons.

12:30-1:30 The Funny Stuff: Humor in Comics and Graphic Novels— The world of comics isn’t just about dark and mysterious superheroes. There are a lot of great funny books out there. The Cartoon Art Museum’s Andrew Farago talks to Comic-Con special guests Peter Bagge (Hate), Howard Cruse (Wendel), Nicholas Gurewitch (The Perry Bible Fellowship), Keith Knight (The K Chronicles), Larry Marder (Beanworld), and Doug TenNapel (Monster Zoo) about the humorous side of comics.

12:30-1:15 American Dad— See a never-before-seen episode of American Dad in various stages of animation followed by a Q&A session with producers Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman and cast members Dee Bradley Baker, Scott Grimes and Rachael MacFarlane.

1:30-2:30 Glee— One year after the cast and creators of Glee came to Comic-Con for the first time, the show has exploded with blockbuster ratings, number-one albums and a sold-out concert tour. Get an exclusive first look at what’s in store for season 2 from executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, along with stars Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Heather Morris and Naya Rivera, as they share some never-before-seen footage, spill behind-the-scenes secrets and take questions from the crowd.

2:00-3:00 “The Batman Dreams of Hieronymus Machines,” or The Matt Fraction Spotlight Panel— Comic-Con special guest Matt Fraction (Casanova, Invincible Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men, The Mighty Thor) performs “The Batman Dreams of Hieronymus Machines,” a weird spoken-word history of comics, art, and his own experiences with both and how comics—and art—can save your life. Also: Bruce Lee, cave paintings, Stilt-Man, and profound brain injuries. First performed as a part of W00tstock 2.0, now it’s coming to San Diego! Then, after that, probably a discussion and some Q&A and stuff moderated by Bill Hader (SNL, Paul, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World).

4:00-5:00 Buffy the Musical— Let’s end this show with a bang! The powers that be behind Fandom Charities Inc. and Whedonopolis.com present a screening of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More With Feeling” as Comic-Con 2010’s big closing event! Many say this is the finest, funniest, most ingenious episode ever to come out of the Buffy-verse. But remember, the best part of the show is up to you! This episode was made for talkin’—back, that is—and singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles, with or without your dry cleaning! Audience participation: it isn’t just for Rocky Horror and mob riots anymore.

That’s all, folks! See you at Comic-Con!
