To click, perchance to dream.

No Load last week, sorry. I was in the middle of packing, moving and finishing up projects and didn’t get a chance to read my comics in a timely fashion. It sucks, because some major stuff happened last week. For instance, we finally got to see male full frontal nudity in The Boys. Well, the frontal part was no longer attached to its owner and was all bloody, but still. A major leap forward. Be sure to let us know what you’re reading from the past week. You can share your pull list here or over in the Comics Forum. Now, on with the Load!

imageThe Amazing Spider-Man #624 Another week and no Evil Aunt May. She’d better come back in a big way and soon, or else…or else I’ll keep buying this comic and reading it, but I’ll enjoy it slightly less. Take that, Marvel! Anyway, this is the issue that’s made headlines the past couple of weeks. Peter Parker has lost his job! He’s now part of America’s unemployed. This may appear to be topical and cutting edge, but how many times has Peter Parker been unemployed? Like, most of the time. However, I am curious to see what he does now that Jameson has outed him as the worst journalist ever. Here’s hoping he starts turning tricks down at the docks. Peter Parker, Rough Trade has a nice ring to it.
imageBatgirl #8 / Red Robin #10 Let’s talk about these together, since the story stretches across both titles. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for. Tim is back and comes face to face with Stephanie, the new Batgirl. When Tim left, she had betrayed him and he’d ordered her to hang up her costume for good. Since then, Tim has made some morally questionable choices and has royally pissed off Ra’s al Ghul. Stephanie, on the other hand, has been working hard to prove herself a worthy hero to everyone in the Bat Family. Will he notice how much she’s changed? I’m reminded of some advice an enemy of mine once gave me. He said that if you have to keep telling everyone that you’ve changed, you probably haven’t. Good luck, Steph.
imageBatman and Robin #10 Is it possible that I’ve grown to care about Damian? I’m genuinely concerned that our favorite psychotic brat might actually be a brainwashed tool of the League of Assassins. He even comes close to defending Dick to Talia. And in a nice character moment for both, Damian worries that Bruce’s return will mean the end of his and Dick’s reign as Batman and Robin. Don’t worry, Damian. You guys can always be Nightwing and Batboy.
imageJustice League: Rise and Fall Special I’m not sure how I feel about the recent turn of events in the final issue of the Cry for Justice miniseries. I’m slightly annoyed and disgusted with the body count, and I’m not talking about Green Arrow’s vengeance. I’m not usually a fan of “eye-for-eye justice,” but I admit there is some satisfaction in seeing someone go rogue and take out the bad guys, permanently. Superheroes who kill are tarnished forever, though. And poor Roy. He’s going to get a lot of bad news when he wakes up. Maybe they can send Damian in to tell him everything.
imageSecret Six #19 The news broke recently that Gail Simone is leaving Wonder Woman. Thankfully, she’s staying with Secret Six, which has become one of my favorite titles. In the world of the Six, things go from bad to worse most of the time. This issue, which begins a new story arc, is no exception. I do miss Nicola Scott on this book. Her Catman was the yummiest. And Catman is going to need to be yummy, if he kills his entire team in order to save his son. Oh, who am I kidding? He’ll still be yummy, even if he wipes them all out.
imageSuperman: Last Stand of New Krypton Boy, am I glad to see the words Last Stand on this whole New Krypton mess. I guess I wouldn’t be so bitchy about it, if the writers hadn’t told us exactly what was going to happen from the very beginning. Knowing the result was going to be a war between Earth and New Krypton, with a little Brainiac and Luthor thrown in, the long, slow trek to that conclusion became tedious and unbearable. So, Brainiac, please…bottle up those bitches and get the hell out of town.
imageThe Unwritten #11 More of Tom Taylor’s powers and abilities are manifesting themselves. It’s amazing to me that we’re only on issue #11 of this book, because it feels like so much has happened. Tom’s beginning to figure a few things out, including what his ultimate purpose might be in the mystery. I just wish Lizzie weren’t so annoying. If she’s going to be our female protagonist, she needs to start showing some consistency and character, instead of fluctuating between mysterious and angry. She’s no Hermione Granger, that’s for sure.

That’s it for this week, folks. Happy reading!
