Enough with all the preludes and lead-ups to the big events! Let’s get there already! I’m losing my patience. Or, in the words of Carrie Fisher, “Instant gratification takes too long.” But the anticipation continues, and here are the titles I’ve been reading this week. Feel free to share your own in the Comics Forum. Warning! SPOILERS aplenty!
FBOTU Comic of the Week
Oracle “The Cure” #2: Check out the cover art for this issue. 1.) Why is Kimber Benton on the cover of Oracle? Doesn’t it look like she’s about to spray the camera with seltzer? And 2.) You can see right down her shirt! Despite that, I’m really enjoying this book. We usually only ever see Barbara Gordon sitting at her computer or showering, so it’s fabulous to see her kicking some ass again! And in Hong Kong! Crawling through the mud to beat some guy’s face in was a special treat. In terms of the plot, I’m sure this will all lead back to Gotham somehow, since it’s part of the Battle for the Cowl series, but for now, it’s hard to believe anyone, even a bereaved supervillain father, would go to so much trouble to save Wendy. You know, from “Marvin and Wendy?” I think most people would just pull that plug and walk away. But maybe she’ll become Barbara’s nemesis after all this. Wendy…the supervillain!
(More of the Load after the jump.)
And the Rest of the Load
Action Comics #876 “World Without Superman” #21: Ursa’s back, and she’s in full megabitch mode, which is kind of awesome. She’s beating her kid and breaking stuff like Joan Crawford on a bender. You can’t help hoping she’ll scream, “Christopher! Bring me the axe!” No axe, I’m afraid, but she does have a special Kryptonite knife that she uses to stab poor Thara Ak-Var…repeatedly. This is a bloody, brutal issue. The saving grace, of course, is that Christopher’s clothes get ripped off, leaving him in a saucy little v-cut number that accentuates his abs and draws the eye ever downward. It must be some sort of rule at DC that all guys who take on the Nightwing moniker must be hot. Good rule. Check him out:
Green Lantern Corps #35 “Sinestro”: I know they have a lot of ground to cover before Blackest Night begins in a couple of weeks, but there are a lot of freakin’ storylines going on here! Sinestro is free, and a rogue Red Lantern creates a big diversion in the Sciencells on OA, freeing the Yellow Lanterns and returning their rings to them. Meanwhile. Sodam and Arisia are heading to Daxam to free the gullible and annoying peasants there from being enslaved by the Yellow Lanterns. Ugh, they can have them. Oh look, HUGE Blackest Night spoiler in an ad by DC Direct. I guess we know who’s going to be a Black Lantern now, don’t we? Anyway, Sodam convinces the villagers to fight with the same speech that Faith uses in the Buffy issue I just read. Weird. Finally, Soranik is on Korugar, assuring the gullible and annoying peasants there that Sinestro is gone and Korugar needs better PR in the universe. Well, that sounds like a perfect entrance cue for the hot pink bad guy himself. D’oh!
Man-Bat One-Shot: Gullible and annoying reach new heights in this Battle for the Cowl one-shot. I’m new to the Batman universe, so forgive me if this Man-Bat guy is a fan favorite, but he’s written as a total idiot. About halfway through the book, I began hoping it was a one-shot because he dies at the end. No such luck. He-Man’s Scare Glow character makes an appearance and convinces the annoying Dr. Langstrom that he doesn’t need a serum to turn into the annoying Man-Bat, he just needs to believe in himself. My only hope is that they’re dragging him into Battle for the Cowl to be used as canon fodder.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars #5 “Throw Down in the Throne Room”: Despite the ridiculous title of this issue, this book continues to be a well-written and produced chapter in the Star Wars universe. I love that they’re continuing to explore the Obi-Wan and Captain Rex relationship that was hinted at in The Clone Wars movie. It makes me wonder if Obi-Wan went into exile not just to watch over Luke and hide from Vader, but to get over losing his beloved Captain Rex to Order 66. In this issue, Obi-Wan and Captain Rex have been shipped off to a slave processing center, which is not as fun as it sounds. Meanwhile, Anakin and Ahsoka must free themselves from Queen Miraj, battle Dooku and Ventress and race across the galaxy to free Obi-Wan, Rex and the rest of the slaves. Oo, I can’t wait!
Vigilante #5 “Deathtrap” Part 2: If you recall, in last week’s Load, I talked about this big Titans/Teen Titans/Vigilante cross-over. The mayhem (and melodrama) continue as Jericho slips further into madness and uses the Teen Titans to attack the Titans. I’m not that interested in this story anymore, but I did really enjoy the art in this issue. It’s the first time Red Devil has looked like a normal character, and not just a photocopy of Jason Mewes.
i was totally thinking OMG is there a new Jem comic!!! then i read, great gay minds think alike! oh how i love Jem, now there is a toy line would love to see as a movie!
