FBOTU Podcast: Episode 13 “True Blood Sucks”

Woohoo! The second podcast in a row about vampires! I must be iron deficient. This time yours truly bites the silver bullet (wait, that’s werewolves) and watches the first two episodes of HBO’s new vampire series True Blood. Here are a few highlights:

He Met Marmalade Down in Old New Orleans
Well, not really New Orleans. New Orleans adjacent. And not really filmed there, but in Malibu Canyon. But still, very gothic.

Let’s Get to the Bottom of This
Apparently, I’ve never seen Ryan Kwanten before this show. Thankfully, we get to see a whole lot of Ryan. What’s that old saying? “Sometimes a good ass can save a bad show.” Here’s a pic of him, by the way:

The Eye(brows) Have It
Anna Paquin is a doll, but her wildly prancing eyebrow acting reminds me of Emma Watson in the Harry Potter movies. I kept expecting Anna to shout, “Wingardium leviosa!”

Jessica Tuck is the Greatest Actress in the World
Making a cameo appearance (so far), Jessica Tuck plays the very articulate spokesperson for the vamp rights movement. Sigh. I love her so. If you listen to the podcast, I mention the name of a character she used to play. If you’re the first to post the name of that character in the comments section, I’ll send you the True Blood comic book that was distributed at Comic-Con!

Yay for another podcast!

I must say, I do agree with you on most of the points you brought up. I do think I’m enjoying it a bit more, though. Yes, the characters are pretty stereotypical, especially on the black & gay fronts.

I must admit that I like the slower pace the series seems to be taking. It fits the setting and cinematography. I think we’ll see much more character development as time goes by. Things are still in the introduction phase. I think there is a lot of vampire back story coming up.

I’m still not sold on the lead actor, though. He’s reasonably handsome (I wouldn’t kick him out of bed), but not stunning. The brooding level is OK, but there is no touch of dashing hero that’s needed to make him a believable love interest.

I love Anna Paquin! She looks great as a blond and has a great mix of innocence and intelligence.

I preferred that actress that played her best friend in the leaked pilot to the one actually broadcast, but that’s probably because I was a moderate “Passions” fan.

And finally, yes.....Ryan Kwanten is BEAUTIFUL with an ass I want to bite. He is definitely elevating my interest in the show...not to mention elevating my trousers. Total wanking material!

PS. I recognize Jessica Tuck from something but can’t place her. I never watched her as Megan Gordon Harrison on “One Life to Live” and the other roles listed on IMDB didn’t ring a bell, other than her guesting on a few shows I watch.

I hope you’re right about the show being in the intro phase. That’s why I’m willing to give it a little longer.
