Get comfy, kids, while I tell ye the tale of Hadrian, September 2010 Fanboy of the Month. It all started back in July, at Comic-Con, where I made no secret that I was on the hunt for our next Fanboy of the Month. I had everyone at the Prism Comics booth on the look-out for potential FBOTMs. I even put March FBOTM Rafael in tights, doused him in steak sauce and shoved him into the crowd as FBOTM bait. Almost three days went by before we got a bite. Rafael said, “Hey! Did you see that guy that just walked by?!” I looked around, but couldn’t see who he was pointing wildly to in the crowd. A few minutes later, Raf poked me and said, “He’s back! He’s back!” And there he was. Hadrian the Bold. My jaw hit the floor. “Get him,” I said. “Get him now.”
Then, just as magically as he appeared, he disappeared. Dejected, Raf and I went to the “Gays in Comics” panel and lo and behold, guess who was there? As Rafael began chatting him up, I slipped closer, with business cards, ready to close the deal. I did my song and dance, while he mostly smiled and laughed, then took my card and waved goodbye. That’s when I stood up on a chair, shook my fist at the sky and proclaimed, “As George is my witness, Hadrian will be an FBOTM!”
That night I had dinner with a San Diego friend of mine and descibed Hadrian the Magnificent. “Oh yeah, Hadrian,” my friend said. “I know him.” He then pulled out his phone and sent him a text. I couldn’t believe it. My fist-shaking proclamations almost never work that fast! But as if by fate, I had an email waiting for me from Hadrian when I got back to the hotel. We arranged for him to come by the Prism booth the next day and get more information. He approached this time, with greater suspicion than before, apparently unused to such a resourceful stalker. I told him again about the site, the FBOTM feature and gave him my last 2010 FBOTM Calendar. As Hadrian walked away, Wuvable Oaf‘s Ed Luce nodded his approval. “Did you get him?” I nodded, grave, but hopeful.
Cut to an early morning in Los Angeles, several weeks later. From a chance encounter at Comic-Con to a photo studio in Hollywood, we got him. Hadrian the Benevolent has arrived. And now I present him to you. All month long. Let’s get to know him, shall we:
