Saturday, July 24: The Gay Stuff

Saturday is, of course, the most insane day at Comic-Con. It’s the day that can make or break a true fan. So, get plenty of rest the night before, eat a balanced breakfast, stay hydrated, wear comfortable shoes and dive in!

I…will be hiding behind my little table at the Prism Comics booth, so be sure to stop by and get your FBOTU swag. Fanboys of the Universe will be there every single day from 2:00PM to 7:00PM. And since I’ll be enjoying the safety of the booth, it’s up to you to attend panels, see screenings and report back to us here! We’re depending on you to share the news! You can see the full schedule here.

Saturday, July 24: The Gay Stuff

10:30-11:30 Comics Arts Conference Session #9: Batman and the Empty Nest Syndrome— Does Batman become a different type of person when he has a sidekick? Join panelists Dennis O’Neil (Batman writer and editor), Michael Uslan (executive producer, Batman Films), Tommy Cash (The Workday Comic), psychologists Travis Langley (Henderson State University) and Robin Rosenberg (The Psychology of Superheroes), and neuroscientist E. Paul Zehr (Becoming Batman) as they discuss who Batman is when he works alone versus who he becomes when he works with Bat-family members.
(Note from Chance: Be sure to ask them about the cross-gendered homoerotic Electra complex they’ve got going with Dick and Tim and Bruce! Thanks!)

11:00-12:00 Reading with Brains: The Rise and Unrelenting Stamina of Zombie Fiction— Authors and survivors include Amelia Beamer (The Loving Dead), Max Brooks (The Zombie Survival Guide), Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer), Mira Grant (The Newsflesh trilogy). 11:45-1:15 Warner Bros.: Green Lantern, Sucker Punch, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows— Warner Bros. showcases three eagerly awaited upcoming new films in this Hall H presentation!

12:00-1:00 Fang Girls and Fang Boys: The Popularity of Vampire Lit— Authors of vampire fiction for young adults and adults discuss the appeal of their worlds and characters. Authors include Charlaine Harris, Heather Brewer, Rachel Caine, Christopher Farnsworth, Chris Marie Green, Richelle Mead and Jeanne C. Stein. Moderated by Brian Truitt, associate editor, USA Weekend Magazine/USA Today.
(Note from Chance: Please ask the panelists to include more gay vampires in everything they do. But positive portrayals of gay vampires. Thanks!)

12:00-1:00 The Venture Bros.— Creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer host a laissez-faire chat about—what else?—The Venture Bros. They’ll be joined by Patrick Warburton (voice of Brock Samson) and James Urbaniak (voice of Dr. Venture) as they screen sneak preview clips from the upcoming season, shamelessly plug their new DVD and line of action figures, and take questions from the audience.
(Note from Chance: Please tell Patrick that I made a list of things I wouldn’t let him do to me…and it’s blank. Thanks!)

12:45-1:30 Futurama— Celebrate Futurama‘s triumphant re-return to the airwaves! World-premiere footage will offer an exciting and informative glimpse of Comic-Con in the year 3010. Panelists include executive producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, cast members Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal, and Maurice LaMarche, director Crystal Chesney-Thompson, writers Ken Keeler and Patric M. Verrone, and animation producer Claudia Katz
(Note from Chance: Please tell them that while we appreciate the “Proposition Infinity” episode, we’d still like to see more gay characters in the 31st century. And more TrannyBot! Thanks!)

3:00-4:00 Queer Press Grant Roundup— Prism Comics, the nonprofit organization promoting LGBT comics, creators, and fans, started an annual Queer Press Grant in 2005 to help queer cartoonists self-publish their comics. Five years and many thousands of dollars later, the QPG has helped out an impressive lineup of some of the best upcoming LGBT cartoonists and remains one of the only grants available for comics creators today. Prism will kick off the submission process for the 2010 Queer Press Grant at Comic-Con. Moderator Roger Klorese (Prism Comic’s Publications Chair) and past recipients Justin Hall (Glamazonia the Uncanny Super Tranny), Ed Luce (Wuvable Oaf), Steve MacIsaac (Shirtlifter), and Eric Orner (The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green) as they discuss applying for the grant, what they’ve been up to since winning it, and what’s next for both their comics and the grant in 2010.
(Note from Chance: You guys know Justin Hall and Ed Luce! They were featured right here on FBOTU. If you discovered them here or just enjoyed their spotlight features, be sure to let them know! Thanks!)

3:15-4:15 Fringe Screening and Q&A— Fringe returns to Comic-Con as Lance Reddick and Blair Brown make their first appearance at the convention, joining fellow series stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble and Jasika Nicole plus executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J. H. Wyman for a Q&A with fans and an exclusive video presentation. Join the discussion of this critically acclaimed thriller, which explores the ever-blurring line between science fiction and reality.

4:15-5:00 The Vampire Diaries Screening and Q&A— The cast and creative team behind The Vampire Diaries return to take a bite out of Comic-Con! Series stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Michael Trevino and Matt Davis join executive producers/writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec to show fans a fang-tastic season-one highlight reel, followed by a Q&A session.
(Note from Chance: Please tell Paul he inspired me to write an essay on Vampire Diaries and the danger of repressed sexuality. Thanks!)

4:30-5:30 Spotlight on Terry Moore— Terry Moore (Echo) has been a fan favorite since beginning his classic series Strangers in Paradise in 1993. His hit series Echo has won fan and critical acclaim and will wrap up in early 2011. Find out what’s next for Moore as he heads toward the Echo movie and the 20th anniversary of Strangers in Paradise. The Q & A is not to be missed!

5:45-7:15 Gays in Comics: Year 23!— This all-star panel examines the rising diversity in the comics world today as the long-running “Gays in Comics” panel continues into its third decade at Comic-Con. As mainstream companies DC and Marvel continue to frontline gay characters such as Batwoman and Northstar (Note from Chance: Northstar? Frontline? When?) and hire top-level gay or gay-friendly creators, independent publishers and creators are publishing unequivocal content spotlighting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered characters, to the cheers of the thousands of fans who are out of the comic book closet. Welcome a top-level panel of GLBT and straight creators, who will give amazing insights and glimpses of surprises to come: Howard Cruse, Geoff Johns, Marjorie M. Liu, Daniel Way, Jim McCann, Charles “Zan” Christensen, Dan Parent, Tim Fish and more!
