“It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the Rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy…”
It’s been a roller coaster of emotions the past few days. Though the country jubilantly boarded the change train and headed off into the sunset, gays and lesbians were pointedly left behind. Voters in California decided to approve the inclusion of discrimination into the state constitution, repealing the right of gays to marry. I suppose 52% of voters thought we’d go quietly into the night, but the outrage and protests have grown and the battle is far from over. Gays in other states have told me it’s not their battle, that it doesn’t concern them. But what happens when it is your state? What happens when religious and political organizations outside of your state pour millions of dollars into a local campaign targeting you and those you love? The outrage over the injustice of Proposition 8 in California, as well as anti-gay resolutions just passed in Arizona, Florida and Arkansas, has spread across the country. This weekend, you can let the world know you’re not going to go quietly away, stripped of your rights as an American and as a human being.
On Saturday, November 15, protests are scheduled in every state of the nation. Go to www.jointheimpact.com or go directly to this page to find the protest location nearest you. I will be heading to the courthouse in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday. Please, gather your friends and family and supporters and let your voice be heard. Let the world know you are not a second-class citizen, you deserve equal rights and discrimination must end now!
We have a sub forum called ‘The Tar Swamp’ where political, sexual and any potentially heated debates can be posted. Not only are such things not deleted, threads are rarely ever closed anymore.
I’ve felt quite redundant as a mod since we started that forum
Hope the protest goes well!!

I’m upset that my home state passed prop 8 but I’m happy cause question 1 here in CT didn’t pass. So gay marriage is still available in CT. Keep fighting the good fight guys. We still have MA and CT.
You know this was such a bittersweet victory last week. My boyfriend was in tears, both for happiness about Obama winning and the fact that we live in a state that passed a law that says even though we’ve been together for 6 years, we can never get married. It really makes me sick.
Havoc: That would be Keith Olbermann, probably the most popular left-wing commentator on television (and certainly the highest-paid). He is know for his passionate, angry rants against Republican politicians. This is a rare example of a very quiet, heartfelt, emotional moment from him.
I’ll be going to one or both of the events in Atlanta on Saturday (capitol at 1:30, Piedmont/10th at 5). If anyone from here will be there, drop me a line.
Minnesota has had its own gay marriage battles. Michelle Bachmann, she of the “I’m worried Obama has anti-American views”, was once a state senator whose sole mission in life, it seemed, was to ban gay marriage. She didn’t even come close to succeeding, and in fact was spotted hiding in the bushes during a gay rights rally (a friend of mine took pictures). I don’t know if attending a protest is viable for me (prior scheduling conflicts and physical limitations), but I’m doing all I can over here to support La Resistance.

Protesting in Birmingham! I so wish I had a Captain America costume to wear.
