I‘m a big fan of homage, so this page from Wuavble Oaf #2 is a valentine to some favorite comic book, new wave and occult horror movies. I tend to exaggerate the queer subtext in the film's original storylines and characters, manipulating it for my own narrative purposes.
The Superman II Phantom Zone Villains are a good example of this fantasizing; I wanted to follow these rogues beyond the unsatisfying conclusion of that film. In some edited-for-TV versions, Zod, Non and Ursa are revealed to have survived being de-powered and pummeled by Superman and Lois. They’re led off as prisoners, presumably to serve time. In my cameo depiction of Zod and Non, I imagine they have paid their debt to society and settled in San Francisco, embracing their previously forbidden love for each other...and the local leather/uniform scene. Of course Ursa has followed, seen here hanging with gal pal Pris...Daryl Hannah’s Replicant character from Bladerunner.
In the middle panel several semi-obscure, cult movie references abound. Characters from the new wave sci-fi flick Liquid Sky, lesbian gutter punk epic Times Square and proto-riot grrl parable Ladies & Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains co-exist in the same frame. I’m not a huge fan of drawing backgrounds or crowd scenes, so oftentimes these guest shots are a way for me to make that experience more fun and worthwhile. It also helps to define what type of dive bar club EJACULOID is playing in; kind of a hipster version of the one from Star Wars.
The final panel shows the girls from The Craft, all grown-up and reunited, despite the rather dubious ending of the original movie. I sure do wish Fairuza Balk would make some sort of comeback!
