The Oaf really needed a memorable origin story, one that not only explained his loner status, but also distinguished him from the extended cast of fuzzy bruisers. Depicting him as hirsute right out of the womb made perfect sense to that end; he’s born as something of a freak, facing the rejection of his biological parents and peers, but still has this undeniable, unique charm about him. Lil’ Papa adopts Oaf at the close of the “Birth of an Oaf” story in Wuvable Oaf #1, because he senses that inherent quirky quality. Besides, it's hard to miss a bearded six-year-old!
