As you may know, Pride High author Tommy Roddy includes characters created and submitted by fans in just about every issue of the comic book. You can always go to the Forum at PrideComics.com and submit your own creation, but I thought it would be cool to collaborate together on a character submission from Fanboys of the Universe.

It helps if you’re familiar with the characters and story, but if not, that’s okay, too. My first instinct is to either go with something funny or something tragic. Maybe someone in Drama Club.

But here’s what we need:

Character Name:
Gender:
Power:
Backstory:
Description of Appearance:
Relevance to Pride High story or characters:

Let’s start brainstorming!

I sadly know nothing of the series but will be catching up on it very soon. As for a character they seem to have plenty of traditional M/F gendered students. How about one that doesn’t know what their gender truly is (shape-shifter/alien/other species)? Just a thought to toss around.

Interesting idea. How about a set of male/female twins who happen to share the same body and can switch genders of their shared body back and forth? In terms of this being useful, it would be a great asset to have for espionage and surveillance (and Drama Club). Plus, when they combine their male and female powers, it could give them some sort of a power boost.

How about twins who are singers (and in drama), and their powers alone are control over emotions (For the girl) and then control over motions (for the boy), and they can merge together and their powers strengthen. (can still switch sexes as well). boy can sing bass to tenor, and girl can sing alto to bass.

Okay. So we have twins who share a body and switch back and forth between their sexes and identities. The female twin has power over emotions, and the male twin has power over actual motion. So, in a fight, the girl could make an adversary cry or laugh hysterically or be paralyzed with fear, while her male counterpart could slow someone down or render them immobile or make them do the Macarena over and over again.

They should have individual names, but then one collective name for them as a duo. We also need to decide on their background. This is a multi-cultural cast, so the sky’s the limit.

I’d say let’s go with French! There are many names in French that are for men and women, the only difference being a letter or two and pronounciation. Emmanuelle and Emmanuel for example. And the combined name could be like Manu (which is a nickname like steve for steven, etc.) (just examples, there are most likely better).

Showers, cheese, and baguettes? Kidding. Hmm.... off pitch singing/music. If they have perfect pitch and all, that really kills. It even bothers people with relative pitch, or just trained ears, so people with perfect pitch find that excruciating.

Or maybe something random like tofu? I dunno… didn’t think about that....

Pride High is essentially about a gay/straight alliance of friends, so they could be gay, straight or anywhere in between. Since they share a body and have so many inter-gender tendencies, I’d think they’d both be at least a little bi. Plus, whoever they date is probably going to have to like the both of them.

true. it could be that they are completely bi/omni/whatever. they just like who the like kind of thing. chance is right, since they share bodies and what not, maybe they don’t even know!

So, in a fight, the girl could make an adversary cry or laugh hysterically or be paralyzed with fear, while her male counterpart could slow someone down or render them immobile or make them do the Macarena over and over again.

Just a thought because I adore puns, but how about one has emotion control, and the other ‘e-motion’ control… in other words, a similar sort of control that involves computers, the internet, etc? There’s something intriguing (to me, at least) about the way those are separate but have similar purposing, being able to manipulate someone in ‘real life’ and/or in ‘electronic life’.

And… I’m just going to come out and say this: as someone who reads WAY too many comics, I think ‘girl with emotion manipulation powers’ is kind of cliched. It’s pretty much a given in comics that if your power is to control emotions, you’re a female, so I think we need a twist here. I could see the guy being the ‘in-person’ emotion controller, gregarious, outgoing, and popular (due to his power, or just a ‘people person’ as a side-effect of intimately knowing how emotions work?), but then have the girl be withdrawn, socially inept, relating better to machines (and people using them)… she’s quite literally a blogger who could change the world, but can barely say ‘hello’ if you pass her in the hall…

Like I said, just some thoughts.

hmmm… that is interesting. i hadn’t really thought about the stereotype of girls controlling emotions or anything. it would be good to have the guy do that. dunno....

Good points, Luke. I like the idea of mixing it up and playing against the gender stereotypes.

So let’s look at what we potentially have so far.

Character Names: René and Renée (Open to other suggestions)
Superhero Name: ?
Gender: Twins who share the same body and morph back and forth between genders.
Sexual Orientation: Open
Power: René, the male, can control people’s emotions and can muster short, powerful energy bursts by draining the emotional energy of his enemies; Renée, the female, can control technology and tap into anything electrical or computer-based and can muster short, powerful bursts of electrical energy by draining power from machines.
Backstory: I like the idea of one of the twins being born, then the other didn’t manifest until later on. That would also lend credence to Luke’s suggestion that the girl is more on the shy side and reserved. If she had been the twin that appeared later, the boy would have already been more outgoing.
Description of Appearance: ?
Relevance to Pride High story or characters: There are existing twins in Pride High, a couple of homophobes named Smash and Crash (Paul and Cas). René and Renée might make good adversaries for them.

As a name, how about we play on Luke’s suggestion. E-Moticon? Or E-Motive? Or something like that?

Good stuff, everyone!
