I recently posted a review of the new Madonna CD. Here’s another review I wrote up yesterday on my blog for a new CD that I think you should all listen to:
Arist: Robyn
Album: Robyn
Rating: 9 out of 10
Robyn made her debut in the United States in 1997 with a pair of Top 10 teen pop singles. Creative differences with her label led to her subsequent efforts being released only in Europe, and in some cases only in her native Sweden. When Robyn delivered an electro-heavy song to her unresponsive label, she launched her own company and put out Robyn in Europe. Finally being released state-side, it’s one of the best pop albums to be released in a long while.
From the playful electro-rap of “Konnichiwa Bitches” to the kinetic pop of “Be Mine” and the sweeping synth-and-string dance ballad “With Every Heartbeat”, Robyn is a collection of fantastic songs anchored by a consistent production, Robyn’s amiable voice, and lyrics that are both confident and vulnerable at once. This is the most obvious in the track “Who’s That Girl”, a defiant New Wave-tinged anthem and the song that inspired Robyn to break away from her label in the first place. It’s the best song Pink never recorded, which makes it all the stranger why anyone would think it would not be well-received by a modern pop audience.
Robyn obviously enjoys her new freedom, and it shows in the dynamic, exuberant arrangements and strong connection she seems to have with the music. Indeed, there are very few low parts to this album, perhaps the only track not worth keeping in an MP3 playlist being the bonus remix of “Handle Me” featured on the American release, which seems completely unnecessary given the quirky-but-catchy nature of the original.
A mature yet eclectic group of solid, enthusiastic songs, Robyn is a must-have for anyone into fresh, genuine pop music. 9 out of 10.
