So has anyone seen the new trailer? I really like what I have seen so far. I’m a huge Trek fan and am really happy to see someone breathe new life into the franchise. I know a lot of fans who are really unhappy with it because they are so strict about continuity and someone new taking on Rodenberry’s vision. I think this is what Trek really needs is some new blood. Trek for me was always a little too passive for the most part, I wanted more action, more badasses, more OH SHIT moments. Trek had too few for me over the years. The new movie looks action packed and the effects look incredible. Chris Pine as Kirk is gorgeous I look forward to seeing him on the bridge. What do you guys think?

So has anyone seen the new trailer?

I saw the trailer with Quantum of Solace. It’s on YouTube now here. I thought it looked pretty cool, and Chris Pine is dreamy beyond all reason. I’m curious to learn how someone so young becomes the captain of a starship. I’m not a Star Trek fan, so I’m looking forward to this as an entry point into the whole thing.

I don’t know what to think.  I actually don’t care for JJ Abrams all that much.  I think he’s a bit over-hyped.  That said, I’m very curious to see the old Star Trek crew with new players, especially Simon Pegg as Scotty.  The last few Trek movies and series were more than a little dull, so it will be interesting to see what happens.  I’m a mild Trek fan, although since my favorite series is “Voyager”, I usually get laughed out of the fandom.

Growing up I always thought Trek nerdy beyond all reason and boring as hell, I simply didn’t get what the show was about. That confession made when I was in my teens I would stay up late not wanting to go to school the next day and at 10pm the only thing on TV was Trek:The Next Generation reruns followed by Designing Women reruns so to get to the Suzanne Sugarbaker goodness I had to go through Trek first. It began with a mild paying attention while I sketched comic characters on my notepad, then I began paying more attention to the story then it became a full blown obsession. Trek had some great storylines over the years. I was never much of a fan of the original series nor Deep Space Nine but Next Gen and Voyager and to a lesser degree Enterprise were all good. I hope the new movie will pull in some new fans and reinvigorate the franchise. I always wanted to see a Starfleet Academy series with a young, sexy and frequently shirtless cast.

Hey everyone, here’s my first post (it’s a big moment)!

Unfortunately the theaters here don’t have the Star Trek trailer attached to Quantum of Solace, but I’ve managed to watch it online.  At first I had a kind of blank reaction, not sure what to think.  I’m slightly irritated by this whole ‘changing the timeline’ and trying to ‘make old trek sexy,’ but in truth, I think it’s in the best interest of the franchise.  Enterprise didn’t make it long, and Voyager didn’t have the best ratings either.  Not to mention the last movie, Nemesis, which I just found boring as hell.  Something has to be reinvented or changed, it’s the only way the franchise can continue… and even though it will upset many longtime fans (such as myself), I’m open to it and understand why they’re doing it.  And also, the cast is hot, so that can’t hurt!

At least, that’s what I think grin

Hey Guys,
there’s a new cut of the trailer out! They replaced the last scene (Nero: “The wait is over!”) with the old Spock (Leonard Nimoy):

(Geez, he’s gotten old!)

I liked the bed scene too… Hope we see the young Spock shirtless too.

Holy Tribble Crap!  I just caught the second trailer and I want to resist saying “it looks good,” but it does. My only reservation with the franchise is that the whole “time travel” aspect gets old.  Lots of great stories could be told without that old plot point.  I also do not deny that SOME of their time travel stories are really well done.

I want them to expand more on Spock’s childhood and dual heritage.  Other than on the Filmation toons, you don’t see too much of that.  And yes, the cast is way hotter looking.  Especially Sulu…

An interesting thing I noticed is that all of the cast looks like the animated versions of the Star Trek cast.  It’s uncanny.  However, I saw the design for the ship and I think I would have taken it a couple of steps farther along in the design process.

To me it looks like the ship is trying to be two things.

1. It is trying to be futuristic and sleek, and has a bit of the Goigle style aspect to it.
2. It is trying to use design elements from the Constitution Class Refit Enterprise.

The Saucer or Primary Hull does not match the rest of the ship.  I would have taken the
design through one more run and see if I could match the saucer with the secondary
hull.

I like the new Enterprise, I like the reworking of stories and I like the cast.  What I’m not sure of is how the die-hards will take to their timeline being altered; with Doctor Who’s time and space line in the UK it’s all reasonably fluid anyway, being a time travel series at it’s heart where things can and do change - but with Trek some of the fans seem SO set in their ways it makes me wonder if they can cope with a franchise reboot.  I hope they can, and do.  It deserves to fly…

...and I’ve changed my mind - I LOVE the new Enterprise!

I’m have a dissenting opinion thus far.

I’m not to excited about the iEnterprise: the bridge is is to much like an iStore, the buzzard collectors are to large and the iEnterprise looks to much like 1701-A.

I HATE time travel in Star Trek.  It’s so over done.  And a new time line so the producers can avoid all the history “written” in the last 40 years is so lame.  If you don’t want to make a Star Trek movie then don’t use Star Trek characters and mythos.

Yeah I’m pretty excited over it, I’m not the biggest Trekkie out there but I still enjoy it. I’m planning on going with a big group at first, this is one of those few instances were my friends actually enjoy a movie enough to see it on opening night. Of course if it’s bad, they’re gonna blame me and say that I forced them to go see it.

Well, I’m one of the Old Guard who dates back to the original series, and I’m also an oddball in that I’m a big fan of DS9. I don’t have too much problem with the reboot/new timeline—when you’ve read DC as long as I have, you sort of have to get used to reboots. I’m very excited about the new movie, especially with Zach Quinto as the young Spock. The franchise has to adapt to changing audience tastes, otherwise it becomes a passe exercise in nostalgia. They understood this with Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who, and their reboots were done well. (Well, they understood that with Lost in Space, too—which goes to show that reboots only work if they’re done well by creators who understand what worked to begin with.)

Anyway, I’m taking that day off from work (with my boss’ blessing) to take in the first matinee.
