I’ve been on a J-pop kick as of late. I’m already a huge Utada Hikaru fan, and I’m slowly building up my Ayumi Hamasaki collection. Really, though, I would love to get my hands on more stuff by Koda Kumi aside from a few videos.
The last week, I have really been getting into people who turn opera into pop or who twist the conventions around a little. This comes from the fact that I am a huge Sarah Brightman fan, and yes, I know she’s not a “real” opera singer and her diction is often horrible, but I love her. Some songs I’ve really been digging lately:
I wouldn’t call her mad. I think “touched” is a better word. She came off really dippy and ditzy in the Harem DVD, but she’s better on her Diva Collection DVD. It’s kind of cool to hear her say “tits” without blushing (in reference to filming the video for “Phantom Of the Opera”). Her thing is she’s supposed to be a mature, mid-40s woman, but she comes off more as a wide-eyed teenager.
Having just watched the Tarantino movie “Death Proof,” I’ve been listening to the shagadelic “Chick Habit” by April May, “Down in Mexico” by The Coasters (chair for lap dance not included) and “Hold Tight” by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick and Tich.
Wow! That was a good song, but I was caught off guard by the video. In the comments they say it’s in the Noah’s Arc movie. I’ve been wanting to watch it. Now I have one more reason.

I love “Chick Habit.” Before my burlesque troupe folded, I was actually working on a chair-based striptease to “Down In Mexico.”
“Etienne” by Guesch Patti. I can’t find this song to download anywhere except on karaoke. And my French isn’t good enough to pull that off. It’s driving me crazy.
