I’ve been reading science books and SF as long as I’ve been reading. In kindergarten, for show and tell, I brought in and read the first book I owned, a book about Alan Shepard’s sub-orbital Mercury flight.
My favorite authors? Samuel Delany, Robert Anton Wilson, John Brunner, Philip K. Dick, Charlie Stross, Ken McLeod, William Gibson, Tolkien. The list goes on and on.
I love film as much as I love reading. 2001, Dark Star, Alien, the LOTR trilogy, Primer, Moon, Howl’s Moving Castle, X-Men, etc. A big chunk of my formal education was in Film/TV production, with a healthy dose of media history and criticism, so I can get really boring on the subject really quickly. A quick tap on the noggin will snap me out of it.
As far as comics go, I’ve never been a regular consumer, but, I do dive into some when they come out in graphic novel form, like Transmetropolitan, The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen. I also seem to have absorbed quite a bit by osmosis, so I can usually follow comics conversations. I’ve been reading Ellis’ and Duffield’s FreakAngels - http://www.freakangels.com/?p=23 - (just got caught up) and I love it. I’m also reading Girl Genius - http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/.
I’m a inveterate conventioneer. You can find me regularly at Arisia, Boskone, Balticon, Readercon, Worldcon, Gaylaxicon. This year I’m actually on panels at Arisia, a little frightening, but, nothing a good martini won’t take care of. Each year, I try and attend a convention I haven’t attended before. Last year, it was Pi-Con. I had a great time, so, I will be adding it to my list of regular cons. I haven’t decided what con I’ll try out in 2011. Ravencon? I-Con? Philcon? Any suggestions?
