Starting in July with SUPERMAN #701 and WONDER WOMAN #601, superstar writer J. Michael Straczynski — a man who’s created layered and compelling characters and worlds on the big screen, on television and across the comic book spectrum — dives head-first into the DC Universe by taking the ongoing writing reins for two-thirds of the fabled DCU trinity.

We’ll have more details about who’ll be teaming with JMS on both titles — not to mention the exciting new directions he’ll be pointing our heroes toward — in the coming months. But today is about JMS and how he sees these great characters and what they stand for.

There’s a lot of hubbub over some supposedly flippant comment he made about Wonder Woman, but I’m personally excited to see him come aboard.  He proved with Thor that he gets how to handle some of the more difficult elements of mythology-based heroes.  And his pedigree of being a writer for both He-Man and She-Ra helps, too.  I really enjoy Gail’s work on the book and am happy to see it transition to a writer like JMS.

I’m not sure I’m looking forward to JMS taking over WW over Superman. Though perhaps it’ll be a step up from Gail’s work, I love me some Gail Simone(especally Birds of Prey!!), but her WW has not wowed me as much as I thought it would. So we’ll see.

I’m kind of excited about this. I love me some JMS. His writing has always captivated me, and seeing as how The Man of Steel is one of my favorite characters, I’ll be curious to see what he does with him.

JMS taking over any book scares me more than my new avatar.
