Fans of cult TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer are studying the series as part of a three-day academic conference at Henderson State University in Arkansas, which began on Friday.

Among the 90 papers discussed as part of philosophy professor Kevin Durand’s weekend course are Buffy and Feminism and Hero’s Journey, Heroine’s Return: Buffy, Eurydice and the Orpheus Myth.

I read a while back of a university that actually offered a course on BTVS and it’s relation to/use of mythology, religion, and ‘the hero’. To my knowledge it was merely a one-time thing. I believe similar course have been offered on Star Wars.

My university is currently offering a course examining cyborgs in popular culture. Yes, a class on Terminators and why they are awesome. Sadly, I’m not eligible for it. :(

I have a friend in New York who is almost a scholar of Buffy academia.  She recently traveled to Chicago for a Buffy academic conference.

Oh my god! Seriously? I would totally love to have studied this, even if it’s just a couple days. That would totally rock. The most interesting class I ever took was on deviant sexual behavior, and even that was so clinical that all the fun was sucked out of it.
