(Please please please let it be true)
After the success of Transformers and GI Joe films, and with a number of other Hasbro properties from Stretch Armstrong to Ouija being made into films, there is talk that Jem is being poised for a truly outrageous comeback.
Universal and Hasbro have not decided, however, how to bring it back. There is talk of a movie with a Chinese director named John Chu attached, but they may also bring it back as a new television series. In either format, Peter Barsocchini (the man who wrote all the films in the High School Musical franchise) is involved. This could be very good (the HSM films are wildly successful despite their complete lack of depth) or very bad (said HSM films are made entirely of empty calories and Neutrogena face scrubs).
I have severe doubts about this, as I’m sure whoever does this will not get it right by the fanboys, but I appreciate anything that brings Jem back to public consciousness. Still, it will never be as good as my friend Cleo’s version of the film, where the Holograms get their start in gay leather bars (the bears think they’re drag queens), Rio pays for his fancy clothes with a job as a hustler, and Roxy has a highly unhealthy obsession with Pizzazz.
I’ll close this with a link to one of the best tributes to Jem and her fanboys: the video form “Jemboy” by Samantha Newark (the speaking voice of Jem/Jerrica):
