(Please please please let it be true)

After the success of Transformers and GI Joe films, and with a number of other Hasbro properties from Stretch Armstrong to Ouija being made into films, there is talk that Jem is being poised for a truly outrageous comeback.

Universal and Hasbro have not decided, however, how to bring it back.  There is talk of a movie with a Chinese director named John Chu attached, but they may also bring it back as a new television series.  In either format, Peter Barsocchini (the man who wrote all the films in the High School Musical franchise) is involved.  This could be very good (the HSM films are wildly successful despite their complete lack of depth) or very bad (said HSM films are made entirely of empty calories and Neutrogena face scrubs).

I have severe doubts about this, as I’m sure whoever does this will not get it right by the fanboys, but I appreciate anything that brings Jem back to public consciousness.  Still, it will never be as good as my friend Cleo’s version of the film, where the Holograms get their start in gay leather bars (the bears think they’re drag queens), Rio pays for his fancy clothes with a job as a hustler, and Roxy has a highly unhealthy obsession with Pizzazz.

I’ll close this with a link to one of the best tributes to Jem and her fanboys: the video form “Jemboy” by Samantha Newark (the speaking voice of Jem/Jerrica):

It would be a good time to bring Jem back. The whole Hannah Montana storyline is very similar to the Jem story. Except Miley’s parents are still alive. And there’s no scary hologram lady controlling her career. But kids love the “secret rock star identity” thing. So why not? Once you’re a Jem girl, you’re never the same.

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have scary hologram lady controlling me than Billy Ray Cyrus, the Mullet That Walks.

i would love for jem to make a comeback! the show still stands the test of time (well most of it) with relevant story lines.  watching back today they really didn’t dumb it down for kids, which was nice.  i know the don’t use drugs episode kept me from ever touching them!

More than anything else, I’ve seen, these photos are the definitive missing link between Jem and Lady GaGa.

This would be great, I even thought about casting like Lady Gaga as Pizazz, Kristen Bell as Jem/Jerrica. I’ve always Jem was ahead of her time back in the day
