I am completely fascinated by fan reaction to Children of Men.
As someone who couldn’t make it through the first series, then skipped the second entirely (though I heard the second was a marked improvement,) I have to say I absolutely loved Children of Men. I thought it was the best sci-fi I’ve seen since BSG started to falter and everything the X-Files movies should have been. Sure, there were a few plotholes here and there, but I was generally blown away.
That seems to have been the broad reaction as well. Its ratings were fantastic and it got great reviews. For casual viewers, they seem to have hit it out of the ballpark.
On the other hand, everything I’ve read seems to indicate that the show’s “fandom” absolutely hated it, for reasons I can’t go into without spoiling. Just take a look at its Amazon reviews—these people are royally pissed.
It’s an interesting phenomenon: At some point, a great many fans start caring more about the well-being of their favorite characters and continuation of an established formula than they do about seeing good stories.
