Comics are now widely accepted as a legitimate and vibrant art form—so why do I still feel a bit embarrassed to let strangers know about my not-so-secret passion?

My fellow Daily Cross Hatch editor Sarah Morean suggested that we turn the joke into something a bit nobler—and perhaps more permanent. And thus, the first annual Read Comics in Public Day was born.

The concept is fairly simple: we’re asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th (also the birthday of Jack “King” Kirby, incidentally) to read a comic book in a public setting—a park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.

Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what you’re reading, say, “a comic book”

After delays and numerous rumors of shutdowns and financial problems, Broadway’s new “Spider-Man” musical has announced a new official opening date in December.

The production, directed by Julie Taymor and featuring music by Bono and the Edge, will begin preview performances at the newly renamed Foxwoods Theatre (formerly the Hilton Theatre) on Nov. 14 and will open on Dec. 21.

“Spider-Man” was originally supposed to open in February, but the escalating cost of the musical—which is said to be the most expensive ever on Broadway—caused the production to be pushed back.

Tickets for “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” are set to go on sale to the general public in September, but no specific date was given.

Organizers also announced new cast members for the blockbuster production. Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano will play the role of Mary Jane Watson, taking over from Evan Rachel Wood, and Patrick Page will play the Green Goblin, a role that was previously going to be played by Alan Cumming.

Damiano received a Tony nomination last year for her supporting role in the musical “Next to Normal.”

Reeve Carney is still on board to play the lead role of Peter Parker.

The cast is scheduled to begin full rehearsals on Aug. 16.

The Advocate reports that Daniel Radcliffe has given a substantial cash donation to Trevor’s Circle of Hope, a 24-hour crisis hotline for GLBT youth. The exact size of the donation wasn’t reported. In a statement, Daniel said:

“I am very pleased to begin my support of the Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work. It’s extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top-three killer of young people, and it’s truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. I deeply hope my support can raise the organization’s visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of the Trevor Help line’s highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources. It’s vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value.”

You can’t get a much bigger supporter than Harry Potter.

ThinkMcFly has an interview with Bruce Timm about the future direct-to-Dvd features. I didn’t know whether Direct-to-DVDs counted as “moves” or “TV” so I’m posting it here.

Are there any current plans to for ‘Judas Contract’ to be developed as an animated feature?

We had quite a few drafts done up, but nothing that we really loved. We did love what they did with it in the Teen Titans series, and for now we’ll continue to go that route. Again it’s like the Batman Vs Dracula, it was done recently, and it worked. It would be redundant to do something different right now.

Is there any chance of ‘Hush’ or ‘The long Halloween’ being developed?

Hush isn’t something that we’re all that interested in our end, but it has come up. The real problem with Hush is that it works better as comic then it would as a movie, it could work as a show, maybe. The same can really be said for The Long Halloween as well. It works a lot better as a comic, and not so much as a movie.

I wouldn’t rule out either of them altogether, but it won’t be happening anytime soon.

Are there plans to do any more sequels for the recently released DC animated films?

We had originally planned to do sequels for Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, but Wonder Woman’s sales started out extremely slow and then over time were eventually able to catch up to probably Justice League Frontier. The Exec’s decided because it wasn’t able to sell quickly right away, where as Justice League was, that there wouldn’t be any more female super hero films right now. We were developing and hoping to get started on a batgirl film based on Year One, but because of Wonder Woman’s slow sales start, that won’t be happening now.

With Green Lantern, it didn’t perform nearly as well as what they had hoped it would. In the long run it eventually made its money back, but the sales weren’t there right away during its release. Hopefully with the release of the Live Action film next year, that will open up the doors for more Green Lantern relate material.

Are there any current plans for an ‘Aqua man’ animated film?

No. We did developed an Aqua man script for a direct to video movie. Marketing decided it wasn’t going to be profitable enough to release.

The comic book needs to be wiped clean and have a re-boot once a year, they’re not able to keep the fan base interested any longer then that.
