Lady GaGa discusses her parternship with Target

I know a lot of people were alarmed that somebody as pro-gay as Lady GaGa allowed Target to sell exclusive deluxe editions of her upcoming album. Last election cycle, Target donated money to MN Forward, a group dedicated to electing pro-business Republicans into local office, most of whom (like governor candidate Tom Emmer) were anti-gay.
They weren’t entirely successful: while Republicans took the state house and senate, staunchly pro-gay Democrat Mark Dayton took the governor’s race. Target has its main base of operations here in the Twin Cities, and a significant portion of the GLBT community that isn’t employed at Wells Fargo or Best Buy seems to work for Target in some capacity.

Here’s what GaGa has to say about the partnership:

“That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever had in a business meeting. Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past…our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those [antigay] groups.”

GaGa claims that she met with “the entire executive staff” to discuss the issue. The Adovcate link doesn’t say exactly with GaGa’s demands on Target are, but the quote is taken from the latest issue of Billboard Magazine, which has GaGa on the cover and a rather extensive interview. Only portions of the interview seem to be online, since the Billboard web site interview says nothing about Target at all.

GaGa’s latest single, “Born This Way”, is significant in a number of ways. It’s the 1000th number one hit in Billboard’s history, the 19th song to debut at number one, the 3rd biggest selling digital single to date, and the biggest selling digital single of any female artist. More importantly, it’s the first number one song that uses the word “transgendered” in the lyrics, and one of the most openly pro-GLBT pop hits to ever hit the charts.

Thoughts on Music Video for Born This Way?

The video for Born this Way came a while a go and these are just my thoughts on it. And if you want, what are your thoughts?

Considering the message this song was intended to have I’m not sure how this video either compliments or supports it. Despite that however I love this video. It’s insane! It’s got a two minute intro that features Bernard Herrmann’s Prelude from the film Vertigo (I love Herrmann’s film scores by the way.) What transpires during this two minute intro reminds of this scene in the Eddie Murphy vehicle Boomerang where Grace Jones reveals her ad for her new fragrance “Afterbirth”(I couldn’t find a clip for this reference). The rest of the video is just Gaga and her dancers doing their thing to the music. The themes and imagery of the video have no subtext and are a subtle as the song itself’s lyrics. There are obvious homages to Michael Jackson which I’m sure people will say are plagiarized. I will also say that the writing for the opening is very elaborate and I can’t help but wonder(and hope) if Gaga is laying down a mythology that will pop up in other videos. Because that would be awesome if that were the case. I have no intention of starting any arguments I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there and say I like the video and how crazy it is.

“There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” Gaga responded. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.”

The pop superstar went on to reveal that she received communication from her Madgesty, and that she’s OK with the song.

“Well, the good news is that I got an e-mail from her people and her, sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single and if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be,” Gaga told Jay.

Typically mashups are very hit or miss for me. But DJ Earworm is always able to combine songs in a way that sounds completely natural, and never fails to amaze me. His annual “United State of Pop” tracks, in which he mashes together Billboard Magazine’s Top 25 songs of the year, are always among the most impressive. He’s just released the 2010 edition, and while I don’t instantly love it as much as I did last year’s, it’s still well worth a listen.
