“If you’re sitting up there in your silly little space ships with all your silly little guns, and you’ve got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight, just remember who’s standing in your way! Remember every black day I ever stopped you, and then, and then, do the smart thing. Let somebody else try first!”

This is Sparta (and FBOTM Friday)!

image

And tonight we dine in hell (aka Olive Garden)! Justin, October Fanboy of the Month, wears the Spartan leather underpants very well, doesn’t he? I bought the underpants a few months ago when they were on sale, so I didn’t really have a particular FBOTM in mind then. So when Justin tried them on, they were a little big on him. Since I was in charge of wardrobe for this particular shoot, it was up to me to make them fit. So, imagine if you will...Justin standing above me...in a wide stance...while I carefully pin the briefs in the...um...undercarriage area. I was also in charge of...um...tucking...during the shoot. Needless to say, I may give up photography duties and just do wardrobe from now on.

Well, Halloween is just around the corner! Be sure to check out Justin’s profile on the FBOTM page and see all the latest shots in the Gallery. And by now, you should have a few ideas for your own Halloween costume! So get those costumes in order and enter the FBOTU Halloween Costume Contest Spooktacular 2008!

Have a great weekend!

Oy! Doctor! What a f-ing liberty!

image

On my doorstep yesterday, I found a little box with exotic postage featuring some queen. It wasn’t Sir Elton, but it was from the UK, which could only mean one thing...the box on my doorstep was a veritable TARDIS, bringing me tiny plastic versions of Donna Noble and Captain Jack Harkness from worlds away. Yay! My sexy toy boy in jolly old England came through and now I have my Catherine Tate and John Barrowman effigies to star in my countless hilarious adventures. If you missed Catherine’s turn as Donna Noble on Doctor Who, then shame on you. Though she’s known for her comedic roles, she brought a tremendous amount of emotion and pathos to a normal woman who just wanted to be special. And Jack...well, you know Jack from Torchwood, where he talks about having sex with everyone, but really only hugs and kisses Ianto from time to time. Needless to say, I was pretty damn excited about my new toys! I mean, really excited. How excited? This excited:

Podcast Episode 15: Springfield’s Favorite Family

image

Believe it or not, there was a time before The Simpsons, when nothing happened of any historical relevance. Then the wacky yellow family we all know and love entered the scene, and nothing would (or will) ever be the same. The Season 11 DVD collection was just released last week, so Johnny M, Havoc and I discuss our favorite episodes and 20 years of the show in general. Here are some screaming yellow honkers...I mean, highlights:

And Then Homer Said, “Let There Be Jebus”
We discuss the hits, misses and milestones of Season 11, including the first utterance of “Jebus” in the world of The Simpsons.

“I’m Bart Simpson, Who the Hell Are You?”
Twenty years of Springfield hijinks. Where did the time go? We chat about the early days when The Simpsons either brought families together or tore them apart.

“Women and Seamen Don’t Mix”
Waylon Smithers. Patty Bouvier. Ralph Wiggum. Who are our gay role models in Springfield and what makes them tick?

Thanks for listening!

I Think We Picked Up a Weirdo

image

Are you sitting down? Because this is big. Thanks to FAO Schwarz, you will soon be able to...design...your...own...Muppet. On October 22, FAO is launching The Muppet Whatnot Workshop. What is a Whatnot? A Whatnot is basically a Muppet extra, one of those guys in the background in every Muppet show, movie or song and dance number. Now...you can have your very own. For $130, FAO will send you a design kit, then you just send it back and in 3-4 weeks, you will have your real-life Muppet creation in felt and foam. This innovation can only be described as Muppetational. Though I’ve wanted a Muppet of my very own since birth, I can’t even begin to imagine what to design. Male or female? Blue or orange? Glasses or buggy eyes? The mind boggles. I have a feeling I’m going to need a whole cast.

Quote of the Week: The Wisdom of Hedonismbot

image

Futurama is such a great show, that not only does it stand up to repeat viewings, it warrants repeat viewings. Choosing a favorite quote is impossible, so I’m starting with a quote from my second favorite episode ever, “The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings.” Hedonismbot welcomes the audience to Fry‘s opera, then gives them these classic words of encouragement:

“Let us cavort like the Greeks of old. (You know the ones I mean).”

I’m glad that, in the future, someone would take the time to design, build and program a robot like Hedonismbot. In addition to the seemingly pansexual Hedonismbot, Futurama also featured a transitioning transsexual robot, as well as Bender as a cross-dressing wrestler, then later undergoing gender reassignment as Robonian Olympic medal-winner Coilette. However, I can’t think of any openly gay characters appearing in the entire series, though Bender claimed to have excellent gaydar. So, either Futurama was following in the footsteps of the homo-free future of Star Trek, or all the gays left New New York to gentrify New New Jersey. As you can guess, I’m a huge fan of the original four seasons of the show. The new direct-to-DVD films have been less successful, I think, but I’m still looking forward to Bender’s Game, the next installment. Here’s a trailer:

Now, the weekend is not yet over, so let us all cavort like the Greeks of old! (You know the ones I mean).

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s FBOTM Friday!

image

Justin is unique in the brief history of the Fanboys of the Month, because he’s the first FBOTM to have a costume fitting prior to his shoot. Usually, the guys show up, I hand them their t-shirts and underpants and hope for the best. But since I decided to do this special month of Halloween silliness, it sort of complicated my streamlined process. So Justin arrived for his fitting, and I handed him the tiniest pair of superhero tights I could find at the Superhero Supercenter. He looked at the tights, looked at me, looked at the door, and I thought I was going to lose him. But then that sly smile of his spread across his face, and he stripped down and pulled the crazy tights on, and I knew everything would work out just fine. So, head on over to the Gallery to see the results! Then check out Justin’s profile on the FBOTM page. And we’ll see you next Friday with a new costume. Hint: “Today, we brunch in hell!”

Who Watches the Watchmen…on iTunes?

image

Are you tired of those fat cats in Washington Hollywood always screwing up the economy your comic books? If purity in comics is what you’re after, and yet you’d like the convenience of having all your entertainment on your iPod, you’re in luck! DC Comics and Warner Brothers are offering up serialized episodes of Watchmen on iTunes, produced by Warner Premiere Motion Comics. “Hurm?” You say. Like in an audiobook, a single narrator reads the book and dialogue while the comic panels come to life with subtle animation and camera movement. It’s not Disney animation, or even Spongebob, but it does give you the feeling of movement, while staying true to the artistry of the illustrations. You can buy a season pass for $19.99, which will include the two episodes currently available, as well as future episodes. Individual episodes are $1.99 each. I’ve downloaded and watched the first two episodes, and I have to say, the poetry and brilliance of the writing really comes through, while the animation offers a stark and evocative backdrop. I’m holding total endorsement, though, until the next episode, where we’ll find out if they’re cutting Tales of the Black Freighter, or leaving it in. I think it’s safe to say that all the whores and politicians and comic book geeks will look up and shout, “Save us!”...and iTunes will look down and whisper, “No” “$19.99.”
