Quote of the Week: Just Staggering
Sometimes, just out of nowhere, I’ll think of something funny that
Carrie Fisher has written or said, and I’ll sort of burst out laughing, often accidentally spraying spittle on those around me. This is expecially embarrassing during otherwise quiet or somber moments. But that’s the odd effect Carrie has on me. The most recent sound bite that made me chortle is a quip Carrie has related many, many times. It still kills me, though. Mainly because it speaks to an insecurity that all smart asses share, I think.
“There was no way that I thought I was going to get the part, because the last line in the script said, ‘Princess Leia stands at the end of a long hallway, and she is staggeringly beautiful.’ And I crossed off the -ly and beautiful and felt more comfortable about my description.”
-Carrie Fisher
Oh, Carrie. You’ll always be beautifully staggering to me.

FBOTM Friday: The Fanboys of Summer
Well, July Fanboy of the Month Joseph made quite a splash in his debut last week! He’s the perfect FBOTM to have around in the middle of summer, too. Fun, flirty and fearless, he’s the kind of guy you’d like to while away the hours with on a hot, lazy afternoon. I think it’s fair to say that Joseph is also the kind of guy who’ll get “friendly down in the sand” on (uh-oh) those summer nights. Record temperatures are being reported all over the country, and it’s only July. I blame Joseph.
Might as well crank the A/C, blend up something cold and fruity and spend some time getting to know our July FBOTM:
• Get your free desktop calendar, featuring July FBOTM Joseph, on the Downloads page.
• Check out the latest photos from Joseph’s shoot in the Gallery.
• Learn all about Joseph and his crush on the Gay Comic Geek in the FBOTM Lounge.
• Watch Joseph’s behind-the-scenes video in the FBOTM Lounge or on the FBOTU YouTube page.
Stay cool, kids, and have a great weekend!

Help Me, Comic-Con Volunteers, You’re My Only Hope
Prism volunteers are helpful and adorable! Just like you!
San Diego Comic-Con is two weeks away, and I’m TOTALLY FREAKING OUT!
Fanboys of the Universe will be exhibiting for the first time EVER at Comic-Con! We’ll be at the
Prism Comics booth every single day from
2:00PM until
7:00PM, or until we’re escorted out of the convention center by security, whichever comes first. And by “we,” I mean “me.” Luckily, I’m going to be surrounded by the awesome artists and creators at the Prism booth, so I intend to take advantage of
them the opportunity to report all the gossip, shocking revelations and intrigue from the gayest booth at the biggest con on the planet!
And guess what?
You can be there, too! Because the event sold out so quickly this year, Prism is in dire need of volunteers to help out! That means you need to already have a badge. If you can help out for an hour or two or more, you’re guaranteed to have a blast. In addition to watching the spectacle that is me attempting to be social, you’ll also get to mingle with sexy and talented creators like
Justin Hall,
Jon Macy,
Ed Luce,
Sean-Z and
Zan Christensen!
Plus, where do all the gays congragate during the con? At the Prism booth! And who do they all look at with admiration and barely-concealed longing? You, the volunteer at the Prism booth! So, what are you waiting for? Just email Ted at
and tell him Chance sent you. Or just email or PM me, and I’ll put you in touch. Heck, I’ll even throw in a FBOTU t-shirt and some swag! So, come join the fun!
Remember,
March FBOTM Rafael will be there on Saturday, and I’m making him wear tights. So, you might want to sign up for Saturday afternoon. (I’m just sayin’.)
See you at Comic-Con!

Gear Up the Gay Comic Geek Contest: Sizing Up the Competition
You think you have all the time in the world, but the August 15 deadline for the Gear Up the Gay Comic Geek Contest will be here before you know it! Entries are already pouring in! To see the entries (and check out the competition), just head on over to Class Comics and behold the impressive lineup of costumes and accessories.
If you’ve ever seen Paul (aka The Gay Comic Geek) in tights at a con, you know bulge control is a major issue. I’m impressed with the variety of ways our costume designers are handling it...the issue, that is. Good work, people! Now, if you haven’t entered yet, it’s time to get busy. All those fabulous prizes aren’t going to win themselves, you know!
Taking part in the Gear Up the Gay Comic Geek Contest is easy! Just design a superhero costume for Paul using Patrick Fillion‘s character art, submit your entry by August 15, 2010 and you could win a signed copy of Patrick’s illustration of your design and a BIG LOAD from Class Comics, containing all 43 of their current titles!
There are two categories you can enter: Naughty and Nice. Just head over to the Gear Up the Gay Comic Geek Contest page at Class Comics, get the rules, get the art and get started!
P.S. You really, really should check out the entries. There’s an Easter egg on the page that might be of some interest to you. How much interest? Oh, how does 15% sound? Go get it!

Quote of the Week: Old Possum’s Book of Murderous Cats
I know I already extolled the virtues and awesomeness of Dex-Starr the Raging Feline in this week’s Comics Load, but I couldn’t let the week pass without honoring him with Quote of the Week. There are so many things to love about Dex-Starr, not even counting the fact that he wears his Red Lantern ring on his tail. Come on! I suppose I’m a little biased because I actually had a badass cat growing up. I do NOT tell pet stories, and I usually feign death when someone else starts to tell one, so I’ll just say this. My cat, Silver, who was by my side for 16 years, was a fierce, loyal and sometimes lethal protector. God help the stranger who ventured a little too close to what Silver considered a reasonable distance. Many a repairman swore never to return to our house as long as “that cat” was still there. I got him when I was four, and he died when I was in college, but I like the idea that maybe he just got a Red Lantern ring, and now he’s off protecting some other kid or planet somewhere. So, in honor of Silver and Dex-Starr, I give you the Quote of the Week:
“I find one who hurt you. I kill. I good kitty.”
-Dex-Starr, Green Lantern #55
